Twenty reasons for voting for a Liberal Democrat County Council
A Liberal Democrat County Council after May 5th will:
- Ensure that decisions are always taken as locally as is practicable
- Make all schools good schools; we believe that an adequately funded Local
Education Authority is essential to maintain and enhance the performance
of all our schools
- Ensure that children with special needs, including specially gifted
children, receive appropriate eductional provision either by integration
into mainstream schools or in special schools
- Provide home care support for elderly people at an early stage, gradually
increasing it as the need arises, including disability adaptations
- Build services around the child, young person and family
- Provide protection and support at all levels of need for people with
disabilities and those with mental health problems
- Improve efficiency, procurement and cost-effectiveness within the whole
Social Services
- Make redundant County Council land in appropriate locations available
for affordable housing to help younng families and people in housing need,
and to tackle recruitment problems in vital services
- Improve standards of road maintenance throughout Hampshire, with a
higher priority being given to pavements than at present (spending an
additional £1 m)
- Initiate a major campaign to promote energy efficiency and the
development of major renewable energy schemes in the community
- Support Alton’s local museums
- Give users of our libraries, museums, art centres and country parks a much
greater say in their future development
- Encourage sports and liesure activities which contribute to a healthy
lifestyle
- Ensure that Recreation and Heritage is at the centre of the County
Council’s policy network and not at the fringe, recognising that the ‘quality
of life’ is important to every Hampshire resident and visitor
- Take a strong lead in promoting better health in Hampshire through all
County departments and the NHS
- Promote prevention of illness and disease to turn the NHS into a Health
Service rather than just an illness service
- Press the Government to fully fund nursing care for the elderly throughout
England
- Continue to support an increase in Police Officers, Police Staff and other
members of “the wider policing family” in Hampshire (in stead of wasting
money on identity cards)
- Press for victims of crime to be properly looked after and to see that they
are supported through the criminal justice system
- Work hard with the Police to help ensure that Hampshire remains one of
the safest areas in Britain to live
